THE BARRIER
A recent discovery of the Bible has jeen a God-send to moving picture directors. Cecil de Mille is still thriving in a religious atmosphere. As soon as he has completed “The King of Kings” he is tackling “God’s Man.” Famous authors and famous artists will combine to produce notable British films. Contracts have already been drawn up for the world rights of the first three productions. The actual production, like the authors and artists, will be purely British. English producers will be loaned by an American organisation on a reciprocal basis and will be brought back to their own country to work. British authors associated with the scheme include Galsworthy, Arnold Bennett and Conan Doyle, and among the producers is Gordon Craig. The actors include Gerald Demair and Sybil Thorndike, and the artists Brangwyn and Dulac. Hollywood has closed down on “extras.” With 12,000 aspiring screen players looking for work, and not sufficient employment in sight to enable them to live, notice has been served by the Central Casting Bureau that nr more names will be added to thr “extra” lists. The gates are closed for the time being at least. It is not likely they will re-open soon. Data compiled by Colonel O. C. Wyman, head of the bureau, shows that during 1926 an average of 710 placements were made daily—7lo positions for 12,000 players. This explains why the drastic order was issued. If more came to Hollywood, it would mean that more would go hungry. “Film Daily’s Year Book” is out, with its ten best-picture list, the result of a poll of the motion picture critics of America. Lists were sent in by 218 of the reviewers. They named 144 films in all, the ten getting the most votes and their rating, being as follows:
“Variety” ‘Ben Tlur” . . 169 .. 114 “The Big Parade” . . . . 108 “The Black Pirate” . . . . 108 “Beau Geste” . . 100 "Stella Dallas ” 95 “The Volga Boatmen” . . 94 What Price Glory” . . . . 66 “The Sea Beast” “La Boheme” 62 49
