“ACROSS THE BAR”

LIQUOR SERVED ON SHIP OWNERS FINED The Northern Company’s steamer Rangitoto is licensed to dispense alcoholic refreshment to its passengers on the run between Auckland and Thames, but it would appear that the licence does not apply when the ship is on Sunday excursion trips to Kawau. When two drunks were picked up at Newmarket one Sunday evening last January, the police were naturally curious to know where their liquor supply came from. It transpired that they had been to Kawau for the day and both on the trip up and back they had imbibed not wisely but too well from the bar of the Rangitoto. This morning in the Magistrate’s Court Mr. McKean fined the company £1 on each of two charges. The costs amounted to nearly £6. The chief steward of the Rangitoto, Frederick Wills Wildman, on a charge of supplying liquor to persons not entitled to be supplied, was convicted and ordered to pay costs amounting to 19s.
