“PRICE AFTER HOURS”
HOTELKEEPER FINED MAXIMUM FOR BARMAN The fact that Albert Edward Neville, licensee of the Alexandra Hotel, was fined CIO in January for selling liquor in unlicensed hours told heavily against him in the Magiserate’s Court this morning when he was charged with a similar offence. The barman of the hotel. Alfred George Saunders, was also charged in connection with the same offence, which, according to the police evidence, took place last Sunday. It was Constable Buckley who found a seaman named Thompson coming away from the hotel with a bag containing bottles of beer and whisky last Sunday The defence was based on the fact that the licensee was under the bonafide belief that Thompson was a boarder. Questioned by Sub-Inspector Lewin regarding the price paid for the beer, the barman,. Saunders, said that it was a shilling a bottle. “That is the price for after hours and boarders.” he explained. completely letting the cat out of the bag. Saunders was fined the maximum in his case, which was £lO. and the licensee. Neville, is now £ls poorer. “There are no mitigating circumstances in this case,” was the magistrate (Mr. McKean’s)'comment.
