CITY VOTING PAPERS
NO LOAN SCHEMES RATEPAYERS HAVE VOICE LATER The voting papers handed out to ratepaying electors on April 27, the date of the municipal elections, will not be complicated by the necessity of voting on loan proposals as far as the city is concerned. The last meeting of the council decided on the £500,000 loan in connection with tramways, but this has yet to go before the board appointed under the Local Bodies Loans Act, and. if the board approves the loan proposal, there will not be sufficient time before April 27 to permit of the necessary formalities being complied with. The loan proposal will therefore have to go before the ratepayers after the new council is appointed—with the possibility, even if it is a remote one, of the scheme being revised. The City Council in committee last eveing discussed other proposals requiring loans, and the Mayor (Mr. G. Buildon) will report the recommendations on these to the council at its meeting on Thursday of next week. These proposals concern the Belgium Street outlet from Karangahape Road to the New North Road and the Day Street deviation. The former is a proposal to open a by-pass from Karangaphape Road by continuing Day Street through to Howe street and joining up with Hopetown Road. The object is to relieve congestion at the junction of Pitt Street and Karangahape Road. The second proposal is that of bridging Archhill Gully to give access from Great North Road to New North Road. Figures have previously been made public concerning these suggestions, but these have been revised by the committee.
