DESTITUTE FEMALES
SAD CASES IN WELLINGTON FAMILY OF SIX WITHOUT FOOD (Special to THE SUN.) Sad cases of destitution have been revealed in Wellington. There is much distress in the city, and social welfare workers anticipate difficulty when the win ter comes.
WELLINGTON, To-day. It was not till after they had slept for two nights in a shed, and could stand it no longer, that a married couple sought charitable relief from the Hospital Board at the beginning of this week. The man, drenched by the heavy rainstorm which raged over the city, finally called at the house of the chairman of the Social Welfare Committee of the board. This is not the only case of distress in the city. The welfare committee recently dealt with the case of a woman with six children who called at the office possessing only the ' ffhes in which they stood up. They
had travelled from New Plymouth seeking work. When these cases were mentioned at the board meeting yesterday, Mr. Chapman cited the case of a married man, with two children, who was paying £2 5s for rooms out of a salary of £3 17s 6d. The chairman of the Social Welfare Committee said that he feared a busy time this winter in the way of charitable relief, for the figures handled in for recent weeks exceeded anything coming before the board for a considerable time. The home dealing with indoor cases was full, and there was a waiting list.
