POETS’ CORNER

STARS (Written for THE SUN.) He said the stars are like trees , Like laburnums blowing in bunches, Bidden about by the breeze On endless whispering errands, And the leaves in the sky arc blue , In the hollows filled with laburnum. 1 think the stars are like terns, Terns blown in from the oceans, Each is weary and yearns For rest and a peaceful-floating , Wings wide, away from the wind. With its seasalt turned to silver. Eileen Duggan. Wellington. SERENITY (Written for THE SUN.) The cold stars swing in polished grace From a high-ceilinged heaven; The still moon swims into its place Among the planets seven. So we may mark the crowding days Pass to eternity, Yet tread these walled and narrow ways In high serenity. Helena J. Henderson. STORM (Written for THE SUN.) I hate these stormy nights, When the wind roars, And tosses and beats the trees, And presses like a giant on the doors, And thunders over the roof in wild tumultuous flights. It rushes out of darkness with a noise Like the sustained deep surging of the sea, Bursts on the house with dashes of wild rain That shines like tears on the black window-pane, And whirls the dead leaves from the ground, And pours upon us ceaselessly In cataracts of fierce sound. I hate these stormy nights Burdened with grief in spite of fire and lights! If I am sad with book, and fire, And friendly circle of my own, Most reasonlessly sad —I pray God comfort all the shelterless, The sad , the old, the lone , And the unsleeping sick who lie And listen to the tumult, spent with pain; And oh, dear Jesus! those whose thoughts are drawn To some new grave most desolate in rain! Alice A. Kenny. Paeroa.
