Leith By-eiection. —The Leith byeiections resulted:—Brown (Liberal), 12,401 Wilson (Labour). 12,350; ‘Beaton (Conservative), 4,607.

Bookmaking Charge. —Described as a bookmaker, John Martindale, 45, Page, S.M to-day, charged with having made a bet on the Rangitikei Cup. He was remanded to appear to-mor-row morning. Bail of £25 was renewed. -

Jury’s Award Qpashed.—The decision of the Hamilton jury in awarding £750 damages to Amide Frisby against David Burke for injuries suffered to a hand, was reversed by Mr. Justice Stringer to-day, who said the evidence did not support the verdict that was returned and no damages were allowed.

Stowaway Remanded. —Nicola Katrina, 30, an Italian seaman, charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with stowing away in the s.s. Niagara on February 15, was remanded until Tuesday. Sub-Inspector Lewin pointing out that the Tahiti arrives on Monday and that Katrina would be put on board if the ship sailed before Tuesday.

English Doctors for N.Z.—Three new senior medical assistants have been appointed to positions in the Mental Hospitals Department, Wellington. They are: Dr. T. Childs, Ministrv Pensions Hospital, Huddersfield; Dr. J. Walters, a neurological specialist; and Dr. H. Hayes, of the Mental Hospital, Hanwell.—A. and N.Z.

Visiting Oarsmen Depart. The VVendouree rowing crew, which has been visitinf New Zealand, left for Sydney to-day by the Ulimaroa. The Australian oarsmen competed at the recent Dominion championships and the Wanganui and Wellington regattas, and although they did not manage to defeat the best New Zealand crews, they put up some sterling performances. They speak very highly of the standard of rowing in New Zealand and of the hospitality which was extended to them.

Big Gift for Hospital. Prince Arthur of Connaught has announced that an anonymous person has given £16,000 to the Middlesex Hospital to be spent on a hostel and training school for nurses.—A. and N.Z.

Settled. —The case in which Mr. James Caird asked for a declaration of validity in an agreement with the Federal Steam .Navigation Company and the Union Steamship Company has been amicably settled.—A- and N.Z.
