THEFT AT OTAHUHU
HAWAIIAN SENTENCED A Hawaian native named Peter Hopo was charged at the Otahuhu Court this morning with the theft of a £5 note, the property of a Maori, Plow Thompson. Accused pleaded guilty. Sergt. Parsons said that accused had come from Auckland with a quantity of Hawaian clothes which he desired to dispose of. Upon arriving in Otahuhu he met Thompson, who expressed a wish to show the clothes to his wife. Hopo accompanied Thompson to his house and was invited inside. Thompson agreed to purchase the clothes for £1 and tendered a five pound note in payment. Accused, however, had no change, so Thompson gave him 10s and accused was to call later for the balance. Dinner was supplied to accused, who then left the house in company with Thompson. He made an excuse to return to the house, where he entered Thompson’s bedroom and extracted the £5 note from Thompson’s trouser pocket. Accused was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment with hard labour. ‘ i
