HEAVY GUNS

TO FIRE TO-MORROW

To-morrow Auckland will hear for the first time the crash and roar of four and five-inch 60-pounder guns. Previously no field gun of this calibre has been fired in Auckland owing to the long maximum range of 13 miles and high muzzle velocity of the weapon necessitating a large area of country for its use. Accordingly several “Hongkong” targets of scrim, presenting the face of a square of eight feet have been anchored 9,000 yards down the Rangitoto Channel, in the direction of Tiritiri.

The 18th Battery, under the supervision of O.C. Lieutenant V. M. Rowland, commenced a strenuous course of training on Saturday last for tomorrow’s big event. Exercises in the handling of the guns have promoted a high standard of efficiency. Sixty-six rounds will fired-
