CARE IN AUSTRALIA PROPOSED MILK BOARD The Bill introduced to the N.S.W. Legislative Assembly contemplates far-reaching changes in the distribution of milk. The proposed board will be composed of seven members. One member is to be appointed by the Government and will hold office for five years. Four members w r ill be elected by registered dairymen producing milk for sale or consumption within the metropolitan milk area, and these will hold office for four years. Two other members appointed by the Government will also hold office for four years. No person who is a director or officer of any firm, company, society or association carrying on the distribution ot* milk is eligible for election to the board. The board is authorised to purchase, hold, grant, devise, dispose of, and alienate real and personal property. FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD The functions of the board will be to carry on research and investigation relating to milk and milk products (including chemical, physical, bacteriological and economic research); initiate improved methods of distribution, collection and treating of milk; eliminate waste, encourage the formation of co-operative societies; and to make provision for an adequate supply of milk for infants and establish grades of milk. The board is also to determine the price of milk. It is further empowered to engage in the wholesale and retail distribution of milk, to acquire or resume the undertaking of any wholesale or retail milk vendor, to manufacture and sell milk products and ice, and establish cold stores.
