PASSION FOR PLEASURE

DANCING. DRINKING, SMOKING PRIEST ON MODERN YOUTH “Proficient only in pleasure!” That was how Father McGrath, now conducting a mission in the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, described the youth of modern times. He uttered a warning against this passion Tor pleasure, urging a greater modesty in dress, moderation in the perfectly lawful recreation of dancing (now spoiled by movements which plainly played up to passidns), the cutting out of smoking and drinking (dangerous concomitants of the dance), and against other evils that developed from these conditions. Discussing drinking, he appealed for temperance, particularly on behalf of the women and children. “Women and children first!” was the cry of the sea. A temperate people could possess the chivalry to make it the cry of the land as well.
