A PIONEER GATHERING (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, To-day. The Taumarunui Pioneers’ Association held its annual meeting last week, the president, Air. A. G. Kenderdine, in the chair. There was an attendance of about 70 “Olcl Timers” and a most enjoyable time was spent. Air. Alexander Bell, the father of Taumaranui, was present. His arrival dates back over half a century. Among others were Air. C. J. Ryan, the original pioneer of the Ohura; the Rev. J. E. Ward, Air A. J. Langmuir, and Air. J. E. Slattery, members of the original Native Township Council; Air. N. A. Winter, an early newspaper man; Air. Ansford, of the Forestry Department, whose acquaintance with the King Country dates back 36 years, and many other residents of long standing. Air. F. T. Brown, the energetic secretary of the society, was re-elected to his office, while Air. F. Carroll, of Alanunui, was chosen as the new president. A most enjoyable evening was spent with song, story, toast and game, and it was long after midnight when the gathering dispersed. HOSPITAL MATTERS The Taumarunui Hospital Board has for some time been discussing the question of the admission of resident doctors, other than the medical superintendent, to treat their patients at the local hospital. At a special meeting convened for the purpose of consulting with Dr. Valentine it was decided on the latter’s recommendation to appoint Dr. Vivian as assistant medical superintendent. Dr. Fisher, while Dr. Howard was to be retained in his present position as anaesthetist. Dr. Howard is also in charge of the Maternity 'Hospital.
