STREET LIGHTS

NIGHT INTO DAY BIG CONTRACT FINISHED By night nearly 5,000 electric street lamps light the way for nocturnal Aucklanders and make the city one of the best-lighted in New Zealand. The Auckland City Council’s contracts with the Auckland Electric Power Board for street lighting finished to-day, and every street throughout the city and suburbs, for a radius of 15 miles, is brilliantly lighted by powerful lamps. From this large number of lamps the Power Board will derive a revenue of approximately £26,000 a year. No charge was made for the installation of the lamps, but under the arrangement the board charges a fixed sum every year for each lamp. Since the contracts were first called considerable alterations have been made because of the rapid growth of the city and suburbs, but the contracts were finished well within the stipulated time. Following are the suburbs and districts which have electric street lighting: Mount Eden, Mount Albert, Newmarket, One Tree Hill, Avondale. Mount Roskill, Onehunga, Otahuliu, Manurewa, Ellerslie, Pann'ure, Howick, Buckland’s Beach. Papatoetoe and Papakura
