SWIMMING
PONSONBY SCHOOLS CLOSE OF THE SEASON A year of excellent work among the younger generation of swimmers will close to-morrow, when the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club will .hold its annual carnival at Shelly Beach Baths for the school children who have received instruction under its educational system. The work of this club from the educational standpoint of swimming is recognised as a very fine thing throughout the province, and with over 300 children competing there promises to be some interesting swimming. The schools eligible to compete for the various cups will be Curran Street, Richmond Road, Bayfield and Ponsonby, while Vermont Street School will compete, but will only be eligible to obtain certificates. The Long Shield won last year by Curran Street will provide an interesting race. Tjjis cup is valued at £SO and is held by the winners for a period of 12 months. A special feature of the day will be the race for the Dr. T. W. Leys Memorial Cup, valued at 60 guineas. This 100yds. competition is among all the Auckland primary schools. There is a comprehensive programme, and, given fine weather, the carnival must be a success.
