PEPPER TREES AT HERNE BAY
* AUCKLAND grows her own pepper trees, but they arc not the variety from which the popular condiment is made. The first pepper to adorn an Auckland street are I*2 growing along Marine Parade, If Herne Bay. The pepper tree is a native 'f of Peru, and bears striking foliage and berries. Those (f growing at Herne Bay were Implanted as an experiment by the supervisor of parks and reserves, Mr. T. E. Pearson, and the experiment has been such a success that this winter pepper trees are to be planted in other city and suburban streets. J Although the trees at Herne Bay were planted only If seven months ago their long fronds show that the L peppers like the soil and the sea air. In a few years' Si ty: time Marine Parade will be an avenue of waving feathery trees, through which glimpses of the blue S harbour waters, boats lying at anchor and the distant :f ■fc hills will make charming pictures.
