PUKEKOHE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The mayor, Mr. John Routley, presided at the last meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council. It was decided to support the proposal of Shannon Borough Council to make representations to the Government upon the question of paying a subsidy upon main road construction through boroughs with a population of less than 5,000 persons. Instructions were issued to the works foreman to carry out formation work on Birch and Reynolds’ Roads preparatory to the spreading of scoria. The works committee was given power to act in connection with the request for tar and sand on Carlton Road footpaths. The foreman reported that to date £2,100 had been spent in permanently forming and sealing Manukau Road, and it appeared that the work could be completed well within the estimate, £2,700. The works committee was instructed to submit an estimate of the cost of providing accommodation for spectators at the swimming baths. In spite of protests by the council the telegraph department continues t.o erect unsightly poles in the borough and it was decided to again make representations to the PostmasterGeneral.
