“EARLY BIRD."

Not Fop Onkaparinga Sir Roseberry was given 11.9 in the Onkaparinga Steeplechase, and in consequence the dual Great Northern winner will not be a visitor to Australia to compete. The Onkaparinga Steeplechase carries £3,000 in stake money. Rapped Hard At Ellerslie yesterday morning Blue Sky (J. Sharkey) and Glenotus (E. Rae) were sent a couple of rounds over the schooling hurdles. They both jumped splendidly until they came to the last fence, the sixth, when Glenotus touched, but Blue Sky gave it a good rap. It was an interesting bit of work. Smart Youngsters Although the Wanganui colt, Paleta, has gone to Australia, there will still be a tine held of youngsters on hand to contest the G.N. Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie on Easter 'Saturday. Those eligible are Cimabue, Gascony, Auratum, Agrion, Eulalie, Talisker, Eena Boone, Melissa, Silver Coot, Laughing Prince, Silvermine, and Mr. G. M. Currie’s trio (all winners) —Covent Garden, Damaris and Thaw. Hard on the Judge It is not often that dead-heats are recorded in steeplechase and hurdling races, but Royal Form and Bay Bell passed the post in the Autumn Steeples at Paeroa on Monday locked together, and the judge bracketed them. Royal Form was stopping at the finish and Bay Bell caught him on the post. Passin’ Through was again disappointing, but he will in all probability do better when the jumping season commences in earnest. Taranaki Horses Coming A strong contingent of Taranaki horses will do the Waipapakauri-Whangarei-Auckland-Avondale circuit. E. George (New Plymouth) is bringing Te Monanui, Mint Leaf, Oration, Jazz Baby and Nastori, and probably the two-year-old Melissa. J. Brown (Hawera) will have Rational for the northern fixtures at Whangarei next week, and may also bring the Catmint colt, Silvermine, for the racing at Ellerslie. No Good in the Wet Although considered unlucky in the Thompson Handicap on Thursday last, Civility was again beaten out of a place in the open sprint at Trentham on Saturday, but this in itself was not surprising. There was a surprise, and this was in the case of the brilliant little daughter of Elysian being asked to race. She is no good on ground other than hard and fast, and with the conditions at Trentham so bad —wet and greasy—it was to be expected that the Wanganui mare would faih In fact, she was never sighted in the race. Reremoana for Ellerslie The Easter Handicap, to come up for decision at Ellerslie on Easter Saturday, is again worth £2,000, the winner’s share being £1,400. This race will attract the customary list of the best milers in the North Island, while there is also a prospect of representatives coming from the South Island. Reremoana, winner of this race fbr the past two years, is almost certain to be a runner, and in view of his brilliant performance in the Thompson Handicap his appearance once more will invest the race with considerable interest. Sprinter Only? Te Koroke has been racing very consistently over the last few months, but he has pot v/on since he did the Manawatu and Marton meetings at Christmas and New Year. He ran second to Belightrnent on Monday at Paeroa over seven furlongs, a distance that seems to suit the gelding better than nine furlongs. Te Koroke is by Humbug, a son of Absurd, from the one time brilliant sprinter Tigritiya, an A.R.C. Railway Handicap winner, so that on the score of breeding alone he could not be regarded in any light other than as a sprinter. For the Waipapakauri Cup Day Guard, by his consistent efforts of late, has earned the honour of beingallocated top weight in the Waipapakauri Cup, to be decided at Whangarei to-morrow week. He is asked to concede twelve pounds to the Taranaki horse, IVJint Leaf,.who is down to contest the Rangitikei Cup this afternoon. The Taranaki representative has been racing with more luck recently, and his winning effort in the principal event on the second day of the Tara-

naki meeting last month was full of merit. The Catmint gelding is a difficult horse to ride, and he seems to go best for the Maori apprentice, T. Tito. Auckland Easter Meeting On Friday afternoon next, at 5 o'clock, the Auckland Racing Club will close the entry lists for its popular fixture on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. As the Avondale Club also races on the following Saturday and Wednesday, the four days’ racing thus provided will probably be responsible for a big influx of the best classic handicap horses from the southern portion of the North Island, making for big meetings at both these fixtures. A Stone Overweight With Ti Tree withdrawn from the juvenile event at Paeroa on Saturday, backers had little hesitation in fastening on to Auriculus as the best of good things, but the Lucullus filly had to acknowledge defeat at the hands of Golden Wedding, whose performance was a meritorious one for she carried a stone overweight. On the first day the Kenilworth filly was left at the post, but on Monday she led practically from start to finish. Mr E. W. Alison, jun., appears to have a smart youngster in Golden Wedding, and although she was opposed by a moderate lot when she -won, there is no gainsaying the fact that she is smart and is susceptible to some improvement. Jockey for Sydney Whatever the fate of the Acre gelding Star Area in the Rangitikei Cup this afternoon—and he was expected to run a .good race—the distance of to-morrow’s principal event at the Bulls course is expected to be more to his liking. Star Area won at Woodville recently over a mile and a distance, defeating Magna Charta after that horse had scored an easy win in the big race the preceding day, and the Wanganui-trained gelding showed that his surprise win just previously on his home track was no fluke. Great Bay, a stable companion of Star Area, was also expected to run well in his engagements at Bulls, for he has been doing well in his work. B. C. Watts pilots these two horses to-day and tomorrow, and he will leave on Friday for Sydney. The Wanganui horseman has been engaged to ride the Leighton colt Paleta in the rich two-year-old- classics at Randwick at Easter. Trainer W. H. Bwyer was anxious to secure the services of Maurice McCarten for his charge, but he has been retained for Royal Feast, the best Australian youngster seen out so far this season. Ellerslie Jottings Right and Left and Haerere leave for Tauranga on Friday to fulfil engagements at the Bay of Plenty meeting on the following day. Musketoon has arrived back at Ellerslie after doing a short season at the Otatara (Napier) stud. It has not yet been decided whether the son of Steadfast and Musk is to be put into work again. Bimlight., winner of the Greenmount Steeples at the Pakuranga Hunt fixture early in the season, did steady work over a couple of rounds yesterday. Stellatour, the chestnut mare by General Latour, from Stella, is to be qualified as a hunter. She cleared a couple of hurdles in good style yesterday morning. A Great Field Last spring the Avondale Jockey Club was fortunate enough to stage a thrilling Guineas contest between Commendation and Lysander, the pair fighting a great battle all the way up the straight to run a dead-heat. Another race that promises to be equally as keen will be witnessed at the Avondale Club’s autumn meeting, to be held at Ellerslie next month. This is the popular All Aged Stakes, in which Commendation and Lysander may meet again, this time over six furlongs, in addition to these crack three-year-olds, there are several other smart ones engaged in this classic, including Reremoana, The Hawk, Limited, Seatown, Oration, Gascony, Lady Cavendish, Money Order, Lady Besmond, Shirley, Grand Knight, High Pitch, and most of the smartest two-year-olds. From these there will probably be left in sufficient excellent material to provide a stirring race. Scales Interfered With For many years jockeys have been weighed out for races at Flemington on a set of platform scales, operated by movable weights. During the recent autumn meeting, a mechanical weighing machine, of modern design, was given a trial. Soon after the jockeys had been weighed out for one of the events, an official tried his weight and found himself 71b lighter than he thought. In surprise, he turned to another official, and mentioned the discrepancy. The second official then tried his weight, with similar result. A third official positively asserted that the machine was in perfect order when the riders were weighed out some little tipie before. An inspection revealed that some paper had been jammed into the mechanism, thus causing the machine to under-register. It is considered that the tampering with the machine was only a foolish practical joke, but an awkward situation might have developed had not the discovery been made before the riders weighed in again. Earned His Impost Vin O’Nill, trainer of Spearfelt, stated at Melbourne last week that the horse has recovered from the injury he received in the Governor’s Plate a week ago. He was given walking exercise, and used the injured leg as if nothing was wrong. He was to be given swimming exercise, and will possibly reappear on the tracks in a few days. O’Neill says that Spearfelt is certain to make the Sydney trip. There has been much comment on the fact that the son of Spearhead has to concede weight to Windbag in the Sydney Cup, but his trainer, O’Neill, has no complaints on this score. “The handicapper was fully justified in awarding Spearfelt 10.4; his record warranted it,” declares the trainer. So far there is every possibility of the sporting public seeing Windbag in action at the A.J.C. autumn meeting to be held at Randwick at Easter. He has done a fair amount of work, and on Thursday morning of last week was tried out over seven furlongs on the tan track at Randwiok. He had two companions to assist him—one over the first three, and the other over the last half-mile. Windbag ran the full distance in 1.30, and pulled up well. According to a Sydney writer the Magpie horse always wears bandages on his front legs.

WHANGAREI TOPICS NOTES FROM THE TRACK (THE SUN’S Special Representative) WHANGAREI. to-day. Electric light is to be installed at the Whangarei racing stables on the Mission ground, and will be available for patrons of the combined meetings. The committee of the Racing Club met on Tuesday night to consider 38 applications for the position of secretary, vice Mr. L. G. Hill, who has been appointed secretary to the Dunedin Jockey Club. The number has been reduced to three, and the final decision will be announced during the week. Adjure and Wee Marble were companions over a fast half-mile on the course proper yesterday morning. The latter was going the stronger at the finish. Illingar is putting plenty of dash into his work, and may annex another sprint before the end of the local meetings. Mr. Ross has arrived with Chair lenge. She is backward in appearance, and will probably benefit with a little racing. Adjuster looks well at present, the spell he received since Kawakawa working wonders with him. If this horse is reserved for the local events he should catch cne. Of course,, he will be awarded a heavy load, but he can carry it. Tresor, now under the care of Tom Bezar, moved well over five furlongs last week. This horse always had plenty of speed, but somehow, when the tote bell starts ringing he is easily beaten. COMING EVENTS FIXTURES FOR THE SEASON March 23, 24—Rangitikei R.C. March 23, 24—Oamaru J.C.
