Last Tuesday M. J. Flavin brought out an entirely novel plan of advertising tho I X L Auction house House, which for originality and nerve puts Artomus Ward's story of tho hair dye and tombstone man entirely in tho shade. Learning of Ben Butler’s visit to this city, and knowing full well that thousands felt an interest in the movements of the great lawyer, he engaged a man to impersonate Ben, and, escorted by a fine band of music, pay a visit to the I X L. The trick worked like a charm. Tho counterfeit Butler started from tho ferry in his four-horse team, amid the hearty cheers of tho spectators, which followed him as far ns the Sand-lots, and down Kearney street to tho I X L, whiohf ho entered, and from the balcony an ■ nounced tho sell to tho crowd. The cream of the joke was that over fifty of Butler’s old oompnnions-at-arma wont up aud renewed their acquaintance with tho bogus General without detecting tho sell. The only persons who did not appreciate the joke are William Wolloolc, who made a spceob of welcome near tho Sand-lot, and several police officers, who actually perspired from the unusual ■ •:>. >( clearing the street for the ; “ ' pv», -Sail Francisco News
