THE SAMOA TIMES. "Sworn to no Master, of no Sect am I." SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1880.
Nativb Deprkiutioxs.—An old subsubscriber to this journal, writing under date of the -20 th instant, informs us that owing to llis severe losses caused liiui liv the depredations of the natives on his property, he is reluctantly compelled to withdraw his subscription. We quote as follows from our correspondent's letter : —"I suffered much last year from the wilful destruction of property by the native war forces, and also last month by Malietoa's war party in Anna. My losses last year and this will lie over SOOOO, and I do not expect to get a shilling in tho way of redress. The lukewarmness of our (the P.ritish) Government is well known. List month, while trying to stop s-imo natives from cutting down cocoa-nut trees on my land, they exclaimed, ; Oh! if i/ufn not mutter, tre can rln trlirit ice like irit/i Kii'llishmen'n proper!a !!." CHUKOT Cl.ril.—As will he seen by our advertising columns, a meeting uf persons favourable to the formation of a local cricket club, will be held at the International Hotel on Monday evening first. One or two gentlemen in town lately procured from .Sydney the necessary material for the game, and all that is now wanted are players and a suitable ground. We have in Apia quite a imniberof young men whoshould. with a little practice, make capital cricketers, and we hope to see the movement For the formation of a club entered into with spirit, and the matter made si success. THE H Milium.—Notwithstanding the unfavourable nat lire of the weather during (he past fortnight, there has been considerable movement tuning the shipping, and our harbour has presented quite a lively appearance from the number of arrivals and departures. Pilot Hamilton now tinds some little difficulty ill getting berths for arrivals, as there are at present no less than fourteen vessels, ranging from :',il to 40i) tons at the various anchorages, besides several of the •' mosquito" fleet. LocKiiKY and l.i:ts' Kxtkhta'inmkxt. —On Saturday and Monday evenings last, Messrs Lockrey and Lee" gave performances at the Court House, which was well tilled on both occasions. A third performance was given at the Pacific Hotel. Miitautn, on Thursday evening, which was also well patronised. Professor Ijockruy through labouring under the disadvantages of exhibiting his tricks on a small stage, and of being without many of those appliances which modern "magicians" have' at their command, has been vevy successful!, in nil [ his illusions, and qiiitu surprised many !of bis audience by the unconcerned manner in which he took fiom their eyes, ears and'other parts of their bodies, such trifles as oranges, &r. As will be seen by our advertising columns Messrs. Lock rev and Lees will give a performance in aid of the Savalalo C'ouvent School, on Tuesday, at the Pacifist Hotel, Matautu.
