THE SAMOA TIMES. "Sworn to no Master, of no Sect am I." SATURDAY, JULY 17, 1880.

The principal events of the past week liavo been the arrival of the schooner Caledonia from Auckland with European dates to the 16th June, and the visit of H.I.G.M.S. Nautilus to Saluafata harbour, a detailed aecount of which will be found in auother oolumn. The news by the Caledonia is not of a particularly exciting character. Matters on the continent of Europe seem to be assuming a more settled tono, that bugboar the " Eastern Question," being for the time in abeyance. In Asia, on tho other hand, appearances are more warlike, for although the war iu Afghanistan is likely to be soon terminated, there are threatening signs of a rupture between Kussia and China. Tho formor powor, true to its aggressive policy, has been inclined of lato to trespass on the extreme west of the Mongolian Empire, and as this action is resented on the port of tho " Celestials," there iB at present evory prjspect of a collision, Our Amcriean ooasins, specially in California, nro at prosont much excrcisod over tho Chinoso qjMtion and are inclined to look upon '•John" as a nuisance, but we bohevo tint even thoy will join with us in hoping th it in the event of a collision botwocn R usia and China, that the Bear will Jnvc his claws trimmed,

■Municipal Court.—Beftfe.:Richard Hetherington, Esq., Municipal Magistrate:—On the 13th inst., Ah Qui was charged with the illegal detention of a watch, the property of Mr. "Neilaon, Savaii. The Court- ordered that the watch should be returned to the rightful owner, Ah Qui to be paid all sums which he could prove he had expended on the watch /or repairs, etc.—On the 14th, Sisi and Falese were charged with assault and battery, and were each fined; $2.50 c the same day Noah was j charged with the illegal detention of a' rifle. Case adjourned for further evidence. Imperial German Consulate. —ln the absence of Captain Zembsuh, Imperial German Consul, who left this port by H.I.G.M.S. Hyena on Wednesday last, on what we understand is an official tour through the Teraga Group, Mr. von Oortzen, Seorotary to the Consulate, will act as Vico-Consul. Wesleyan Mission.—By the arrival of the Caledonia on Monday last, the Wesleyan Mission in this Group received an addition to its staff in the person of 'the Rev. Mr. Collier. This mission has been rather short-handed for some lime, tho Rev. Mr. Mathieson, who is located at Lufi Lufi, if we remember rightly, being its only representative here, so that tills latest addition to its workers will find plenty to engage his attention. Mr. Collier, very sensibly, briugs with him a help-meet to cheer him in his labours. The Weatjter.—The beautifully fine weather which we have had during the past week broke yesterday morning, and in tho-course of tho day rain fell in torrents, much to the discomfort- of those who desired to be present at Mr. Alvord's auction sale, and also much to the chagrin of the natives of Apia and Lelepa, who had arranged to try conclusions at a match of "tia-tia" or stick-throwing. Tho change, however, was very beneficial in laying tho dust, which had become rather trying' to pedestrians who have to make the tour of the beach road several times a-day. If the Municipal Board are in funds they might spend the public money in worse ways' than by starting a water-cart, or, failing this, let the prisoners be supplied with buckets with which they might, each morning, carry enough water from the Mulivai to lay the. dust on the worst portions of the main road.
