A FLOATING ISLAND.
Among tlic many natural curiosities of this county it is not generally known that there is a " floating island." Up in the " Siskiyous," lyiriff like a purl in the great mountain chain, is Squaw Luke, a beautiful shoot of water now utilized l.y a mining company as a reservoir. For many yoais the lake has been n fnvourilo and delightful resort for fishing parties, r-nd contained nearly iu its centre an Nund, comprising about an n :re ol ground, covered with luxuriant grass and a growth of willow and alder. It was novor dreamed that the- pretty little island was not part of term Hnna; but when the bulkhead across the outlet of the lake damned up its waters, the island rose slowly until.it had been elevated '"illy sixteen foot above its original loyal. It would bo a question for the naturalist rather than the geologist to determine the ago of this floating island,,as it is "videutly tnnde up entirely of decayed Vegetation. Perhaps at souio remoti period the roots of a tree, uptorn by a mountain storm and drifting out into the lake, formed the nucleus from which the >*l»Hd hne grown ; but it seems lingular 'lint it should have remained anchored [tod unchangeable in its position. The '"cidity is cinch frequented by pleasure""ekers, who will hereaftor notice the increased elevation.—Jacksonville (Oregon) sentinel.
