DESPERATE AFFRAY IN MISSISSIPPI.
The Vicksburg Herald snys:—ln the .annals of deadly affrays in this State, we know of no occurrence so fatal in its results as that which occurred ou board the steamer Sunflower, while lying at Johnsonville, the county scat. of Sunflower County, The particulars,, as pear as Hire can gather them, are about as follows : About ten.days ago, Col. D. A. Holmnn, while in JoJwiiionville, on entering Dr. "W. L. Lowry'a store, was accosted by Dr. Lowry, whoordered Holmnn out, remarking, it is said, that Holman was no gentleman; ;.and did. not keep his word, or something to that effect. . Holman departed, saying, in substance, he would see I/owry'agajn. On the morning of the affair, engaged passage on the steamer Sunflower, for -Vioksburg, hisfather-in-law,- Dr. G. C. The boat arrived at .Tohnsonville.BOjriewhat earlier than usual, and Col. Holman.and Dr, Walker together went on shpre,, but in a sliort time returned. . Perhaps a half-hour later, Dr. Lowry, as. wins, usual with him, came on the boat to. transact his business, and while entqijing the cabin was caught, so it is said, by the left-arm or back by Col. Holman jviio. turuod Lowry half-wiy around anil..putting his pistol to his hreast fired", ' Lowry started down the cabin, but instantly turned, and seeing his clerk, John. C. Arnold start from his rhair, said, " Kill him John, kill liim, he has shot me." Arnold ran out of the •cabin "to attack Holman, and Ijowry, walking to tho cabin door coeked his pistol and fired at Holmnn. At the same instant of time, perceiving Dr..» Walker with pistol Walker with deadly offeci, Walkfct foiling and expiring almost without a straggle. Lowry then walked haok in the-cabin, staggering, and fell, and in about two minutes expired also. b> tho meantime Arnold and Holmnn wore fighting outride the cabin, Arnold receiving a wound iu the chest, and died shortly after being removed from the boat, Colonel Holman being wounded in the left arm and side, but to .what extent could not he ascertained, aa the boat left short ly afterward.
Tbe affair is deeply regretted, as all the parties eugaged are very highly reap wted. Or. Lnvry was a brother of Oeaeral Uobert Lowry, and leaves n widow and six children. Arnold was a brother 'if Judge Arnold, of Columbus, Miss.; Colonel Hulman being a prominent and talented lawyer, and respected iu the Community in which he lives. Dr. | Walker was one of the oldest residents of the county, and wo believe had no enemies, Colonel Holman, the only survivor, was immediately arrested.
