Let it be known that there is placed in you the highest trust, trust in your courage and faithfulness and your entire gaodllMl, and your care over nil the Go-: vuinitieiit of Samoa, Therefore you are made and appointed to devote yoursolf
to your office as director of laws and-in structor, and «t|*rially in other directions which y-.u shall five in accordance with the Government of Samoa when the Tuimua and Faipulo shall order. You who are appointed are to devote yourself well to and to perform well the busines.if your office as director of laws and instructor. Let it l.e done with upright neea; let fear and concealment (covering over) be laid aside. Abide by the constitution and the laws of the Government of Samoa—alike the laws now existing and laws in the future to be made by those who are appointed. Let this apjiointment be carried out with all your might until changed according to law. Ilere is placed our handwriting and the great seal of all the Government at Muliuuu, on this the fourteenth day of February in the year of the Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine Done by order of the Taiinua and Faipule M K. LF. Mamea, Secretary of Samoa. [Government seal.] [" Abide by the constitution " ; that's the rub We have beou under the impression that the Samoa " Government " did not possess a constitution, for we have never been able to get a sight of it, nor have we been able to find anyone who knows anything about it. If the "Government " or their adviser will kindly favour us with a copy of this valuable document we will most willingly publish it for the benefit of a beuighted populace, both native and foreign.—Ed.
