As he ap- ,■ prooched them, and when in their midst, o they evinced no fear of his presence, and, 0 instead of Hying away on his entrance t among them, they pressed around him in r greater numbers, and almost immediately 1 attacked him with their sharp lulls with o great fury, At first he was disposed to 0 treat the attack as a trival matter, and t, attempted to brash tlieiu away with his 1 hands, !>uf the few thus displaced were - immediately replaced by myriads more, f darting, chattoring, and piercing him < with their sharp hills like " the flight of a i. cloud of arrows." The immense num.beia i and persistent charge was so great that .. he was soon thrown to the ground. Now t thoroughly alarmed, ho struggled to his f foot. Covoring his eyes and face with i one hand, as well as passible, he en- . dcavourod with the other hand to wrest t- from the fence at his side a stake or . picket .with which to defend himself, hut ,• not succeeding, and the wild and infuri- . ated little warriors still increasing their ) attack, he was forced to light them again . with his hands, when again he was thrown . to the ground.
