THE SAMOA TIMES "Sworn to no Master, of no Sect am I.' SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1878.
To-dav, in every country in the world, Scotchmen are celebrating the anniversary of their Patron Saint. This enthusiasm often excites the indignation nf Englishmen who can sec no necessity for all the fuss attendant on these gatherings, and who believe clannishness to lie oidv selfishness in disguise. -' : ,.,. v-ears n""o at the festival iu Calcutta, the whose lot it was to propiise the " Ladies " innocently hinted thai all present beimr Scotchmen, would heartily drink t \w toast. A wrathful Englishman wrote to tho papers a few dayß after to ask whether Scotchmen had any monopoly in regard to the fair SOS ; a wordy warfare ensued almost us amusing as that lately raised by "Suum Cuiciue." It is worthy of note, perhaps, that in the East, Sootchmcn on St. Andrew's Day drank to the " Kmpress of India "years before HerAlajesty formally assumed the title. Whether clannishness be synonvmotis with selfishness is a point we will not raise. All we know is that in new and undeveloped countries these annual gatherings of men Iwlotigingto an ancient nationality do much good by evoking charity, by making known the needs of fellow-countrymen in distress, and by cementing the bonds of brotherly love and patriotism.
