The machine not only | e it. the air, hut moved backward, and I >t ward up anil down, at the option of the aeronaut, and, although embracing in part the balloon principle, the evolutions i wore accomplished without waste of gas iu descending or any uso of ballast whatever. The aeronaut worked the central propeller of the machine with effect, and rose over every obstacle to the height of 100 feet. The breeze was blowing to the eastward, and the exhibitor allowed his machine to be carried with it for an eig.ith of a mile and amused himself by showing his ability to ascend or descend at will. Then the propeller at the pointed cud of the frame-work was set in motion, and the machine shifted it- -oursc, twisting and timing in ill clerics. Still its nerai mitt was to the eastward, with tic wind, and the spectators freely expressed the opinion that its powers were at an end, and that it could novor return against the wind ; but, at a signal from Profesor Kichtvls, the machine was pointed hock toward the exhibition grounds. Tin- propelling wheel was started at top speed, and with accelerated motion the air ship sailed along back, at an altitude of 10d feet, until it iiuven.! v- .-viuU- , . mds; then, amid ...... , . the central propeller was set in motion, and under its influence the ship sank . lowly and easily to the earth, lauding "mlrlu half-a-dozen rods from the original starting-point-
