Commercial Acexcy at Paoopago. —lt is a matter of curiosity to many Americans here to know why a t 'ominercial Agency was established by tic L". !S. Department of State at Pagopago, on the island of Tutuila. What purposo it can .subserve beyond that of allowing the agent to draw bis gIOOO salary annually, is beyond the comprehension of human knowledge on these islands. There is only one white person residing at the port of Pagopago, and perhaps not one vessel a year on an average enters that port from the United States. It is understood that when Mr. Goword, the Commercial Agent for Pagopago, visited that port on the C.S.S. Adams, he could only give notice of his appointment by posting it US on u coeoanut tree, as there was no one to rend it. Mr. Goword remained there less than a week all told. and we suppose drew on the I". 8, Government for tSSOi or a quarter's salary. It can be considered only the height of folly to divide the V. 8. Consulate for tho Sainoau Islands. It would be much more sensible to increase the salary of the Consul hem, whose time is fully occupied, and whose position is most responsible.
