WHY WAS CARDINAL PECCI ELECTED POPE?
The Vienna Tagblatt asks, " Why was CardinalPecoielected Pope <" and answers the question as follows :—" Because Cardinal Miuaco la Valleta is a bad sleeper. Cardinal Amati is paralyzed. Cardinal di Pietro is to much in debt. Cardinal Belli composed too Syllabus. Cardinal Morichini is dying. Cardinal Aschini is too scrupulous. Cardinal Carafa is a Neapolitan. Cardinal Paneblanco is a monk, ignorant of the world. Cardinal de Luca is too liberal, and too small of stature. Cardinal Bartolini is to fanatic. Cardinal Parocehi is too young. Cardinal Cardinal di Canossa is to closely connected with Austria. Cardinal Ferrieri is the sou of a domestic. Cardinal Berardi had relations with the Ex-Minister Niootera. Cardinal Chigi is a Jesuit, and narrow-minded. Cardinal Franchi is too friendly to Ex-Queen Isabella of Spain. Cardinal Antici Matti is a cipher. Cardinal Martinelli is a vulgar monk, and badly brought up. Cardinal Gianelli is to reactionary. Cardinal Simeoni is not sufficiently independent. Cardinal Caterini is the alter ego of Father Bekx, General of the Jesuits. Cardinal Mcrtel is a creature of the late Antonelli, whose memory is detested in the Sacred College. Cardinal Cousolini is to liberal ; he is the author of an essay which represented that the grandfather of Pius IX. was a jew. Cardinal Borrotneo has led to shameful a life; everybody at Rome knows his relations with Mine. Pomponi, sister of the euro of the San Rocco. Cardinal Randi made himself odious as director of the Police. Cardinal Paoca i-i feeble-minded, and he is to much compromised by his gallantries. Cardinal N'inu was implicated in the terrible affair of the young girl of Olio, who died from poison. Cardinal Sharrette was likewise compromised by a great deal of scandal. As the Cardinal were determined to vote only for an Italian, there was no other choice then Cardinal Pecei.
