EXTRAORDINARY ACT OF HEROISM.
The Halifax (Nova Scotia) "Chronicle " has the following : —" The town of Picton has just been the scene of one of the most heroic deeds ever done by a young girl; and another name has been added to the list of Canada's heroines. On the evening of May 15, Mrs. Captain Ivy, a widow, on going out of her house, locked in the room her two children, Henry and Alice, aged respectively five and seven years. About B'Bo p.m. they rose from the bed and lit the lamp. There was some wearing apparel han"ing on the wall, and directly under was a trunk. On this they placed the lamp, which [mi liatoly set the clothes on tiro, and filled the loom with flame and smoke. The children were naturally excited in their dreadful position, hardly knowing what to do. The little girl knew that the key was in the lock on the outride of the door. Her only thought appeared to be for the brother under her care. She formed the terrible project of jumping to the ground from the third-story window. The noble girl, instead of giving the alarm from the window, was unable to wait. Her brother must be let out Immediately ; and, accordingly, crawling out on a shelf fastened to tin' window, nnd lowerma nenelf the length of hei ihor! arm*, she
dropped down la Dm ground—* distance of exactly thirty-five fed l>y tap.; measurement. The air (Might her clothes in her descent, and broke the fall, otherwise she must have been terribly Injured. She then rushed upitaira, but upon opening the door was bonified St the absence of all signs of her brother. Her perplexity found vent, in cries as gho ran for help. In the meantime fellow, scared out of bis senses, did not heed the command to stop until she opened the door, but crawled out to see where his sister had gone, and fell over the shelf to the ground. Happily, the internal injuries which he received, no far as can he vet ascertained, are not very serious. The arm and leg of his daring sister were slightly injured."
