Either before or daring the melee the manager called an old Bmm own to him, and asked him to apeak to too Semoaaa. Th« old man ni about to do to when ho tu struck on the temple by a Mono from a black bo/, and knoakod down ineoaaiblo. Wh«n tbo other Satuoans •aw too old man apparently dead, one of them went forward, and «trui-k the manager name tbo face with the handle of a Monk boy'a *P**r that ho bad picked up Another Bemoan than •truck him (the manager) with bis not, and kaooked him down. There •pp»ore to ho no evidence that they ■track him whoa ho wa« on the ground. but M he ia eevnrely hart it u quite pooaiUe he was struck when down. The Samoana that took part in tbo fight hare been tried by the Chief Judge, and eontenoed each to one Jear'a imprisonment with hard ibour. What action the German Consul ia taking in regard to tbo black boy*, who really ouminenoed the row, we hare not yet beard, but we sincerely hope it will be men as will prevent the reourreneo of such lawloaa ocenoe in the future.
This is now the third time within tha last few months that Barnoans have been attacked by black l>oye io the employ of the Gorman firm. In two «*««•#. at Sogi and Vaitelo, the result hue been fatal to two Samoans, one being shot dead with a shot gun. and the other hacked with a knife and stabbed with a spear in such a manner that h«> died u few days >iftowards. The'black hoy concerned in the Bogi outrage wan tried U-f'ro the Oermaa Gon*ul, and sentinc-d to three months' imprisonment We refrained from commenting at the time nn what appeared to us the exceed ingly light punishment inflicted in this ease, which woe olenrly one of deliberate murder, or, at least, innn ■■laughter of the first di-gree ; but we arc very much afraid that the lenient judgment thus given han had a good deal to do with the agKreasiro action* of tho labour hoyn in tho two subsequent occurrence* Punishment is supposed to be meted nut as a preventative or warning to other probable lawbreakers, and not as revenue or satisfaction ftjr the orime eomoiitted end the punishment that would he sufficient for that purposo amongst the people of a highly civilised community would be totally iaadequaie when applied to a semi barbarous roee like the black la hour boys. Strong measures should be taken to oompel plantation managers to adopt the legitimate and sensible sot |M of complaining to their Consul against Bsmosn or otbor trespassers. MaKetoa Matunfa'e Governmeat are quite strong enough uad perfectly willing to punish any Samoan found trespsasiag on any white man's property. Why then resort to such measures aa thaw adopted at Yailele, measures almost sure to load to disastrous results ia tha present, and the future oonssquences of whieh it ia net difficult to formes.
