Tito unfortunate victim a native of the town'where he met his death, wan formerly, as wore a!! hi« people, a staunch supporter of MalioUi&i hut influenced by his wife, who was in some way connected with Tatoaseso s people, he was induced to renounce his allegiancu and follow the fortunes of Tamasese, and fought for him in the late war. A »hort time ago the deceased's wife died, and, he now being a free man, went bark t<> his nle intending to make atonement lis desertion. He would most likely be received by his people, ami pardoned, if it were not for an edict of the chiefs that none of tho people of the town who were fighting tor Tamasese should be aHo wed to return to the place under pain of death. The poor fellow evidently* knew nothing of this law, and an met his fate. Upon making enquiries we learned that this severe law was the outcome of the harsh treatment the chief Lauati received at the hands of Tamaseso's peoplo in a neighbouring town a few inoatha ago. Lauati and one other chief were indneed to , pay a visit to a Tamasese (own, whan they wore'treacherously seised and imprisoned, and kepi to gaol about two aaontha,and treated with grant indignity. It was in revenge lor this treatment that Lauati when released issued this terrible law, which we hope will bo immediately cancelled.
