Faulkner's stors, house and pardon were speedily destroyed. Mr. Marmont. in charge during tho j proprietor's absence in the colonics, was with difficulty aroused. The fl imes then spread northward across the pathway leading to Totoga polio* station, and consuming the residence of Mrs. Hawkesley. who succeeded in saving a portion of effects, though they were murih damaged. This hdy \ was, unfortunately, uninsured. Mr. | Solomon's property was, it is stutcd, i insured for £3su £IOO on the buildi ing and 4*250 on the goods in storo. Mr. Faulkner had effected insurances to the amount of £SOO. Thefire engino was got into working order aftersomi' time and wns useful in preventisw U' frame of Messrs. Miller and Headdy's new store from catching. Providentially there was no wind, nor did any personal casualty occur. By about half-past throe all was overConcerning the. outbreak in Sura but meagre details are yet to hand. The fire occurred in the business part of the town, and as the means of extinguishing the flames were inefficient, the conflagration was not stopped until the premises of Messrs. Kopcen, Collins, and Swann were destroyed All wero covered by insurance but f»r what amount the risks were has nut transpired., The hurricane which occurred in January last did not do so much damage as was at first expected and was almo*: entirely confined to the islands of Ram'ii and Taviuni, whjre the native plantations suffered .jjterely.
