Mr. H. 0. Thurston Killed.
A telegram was rocoived in town this morning from Taurangn, to the effect that Mr. H. 0. Thurston had beon killed by a full from his horsp. Deceased is brother of Sir J. Bates Thurston, K.CM.G., Governor of Fiji and commander-in-Chiefi and Commissioner for tho Westorn Piicific. Far a long time he was resident in Fiji, and formerly held the position of Postmaster under tho Government of King Thakombau. A fow yeavs ago be camo here in a viry bad statu of health, aud was givon the cliargo of a native school up North. Aftorwards he was shifted (o the school ut Mutattt, on the Bay of Plenty, about forty miles south of Tnuranga, and he bad chargo of this school up to the time of his unfortunate accident. Mr. Thurston was a man of somo erudition, and was intimately acquainted with tho physical characteristics of tho Fiji Islands, with tho natives, their customs and traditions, and ho will bo known as tho author of a " Guide to Fiji," published at the Star office, and recognised as the authority on che subject. Mr. Thurston leaves a wife and five young childron who are at present at the Bay of Plenty. It is very probable thtt tho fatal accident occurred when tho unfortunate gentleman was either going or" returning from Tuuranga.— Auckland Star.
