THE SAMOA TIMES. "Sworn to no Master, of no Sect am I." SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 1889.

In fulfjlment. i prpmm we have this week Jyminenced the issue of an extended sheet. We feel that the importance which Samoan affaire has tmiver- ;;'.-. .- .' jy 'Unfit* ' \" '••*/? 1:"' » sal interest taken in .out peculiar circumstances in all parts of the civilised world, demand that an in<jj»ase<J space >hould be afforded in r ""~our columns for conveying to our people here, the fullest and latest information from the European, "American, and AUfitralian newspapers which contain subject matter relating to our islands. 'Samoa and its future has now become an international question. This dissirable object has no doubt been hastened lately by the native war, and the ofibe English and Americans here and their Samoa bus for years been waiting for the three tenu ine on some.suitable constitution on which to establish a permanent government;- and' eVery mail has been attiioualy looked for, hoping and expecting to hear (bat our unsettled state was engaging the attention ofc/Qfq'; I ,oW pWH jetf those nations. Such conduct has certainly not impressed the native niind with the advantages of civilisation. In numerous Insjanccsthiat have lately come under the notice of foreign residents here the Germans of Samoa could receive a lesson jn kindness and discretion, from -the -natives now engaged in the War." Great Britain'has not escaped censure. The high-handed conduct of the Germans if known in England should not be permitted to continue so long. .It is not in accordance with British practice to allow a noble native race as the Satnoans undoubtedly are, and with whom Great Britain was in friendly relations for years, to be forgotten in their troubles and left to the. mercy of the Germans in Samoa, who by their oppressive rule have always been feared and hated by the Samoan people. Neither was it consistent for Great Britain to hand over to' any power, the light to rule over her own subjects without acquainting them of such a change, and without a guarantee that their rights and liberties should be respected. It certainly is not what British subjects are accustomed to; neither should their interests be permitted to suffer from any feeling of delicacy on the part of Great Britain in their relations with Germany or any other power. In a future issue we will discuss the aiu-wers given by the Under-Secretary of State to Mr. McArthur in tie Hou.se of Commons re the question on Samoan affairs.
