Rimniku-Sarat is a town of some strategic importance 45 miles west, north-west of Braila, with a population of over 14,000. It is on the railway from the Capital (100 miles,to the south) to Fokchani. (30 miles; distant) and northward through Moldayia. The objective pf ~the,,,l G ermans is Galatz, which is 12 miles north-east of Braila, preparatory to the invasion of Bessarabia, and the cutting off of the Allies in Dohrudja. Braila has a population of over 60,000, on the State railway lino, Galatz to Buzeu, and exports wheat and other cereals, cement, petroleum etc. to the annual value of over three millions. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, Braila belonged to the Turks. Galatz, which claims over 65,000 inhabitants, is a port of the Danube on the left bank of the river, ten miles above its junction with the Pruth. The town is built in the iorxu of an amphitheatre, and is the centre of a very big trade, much of whicn, of late years, however, has been passing to the sister town of Braila. At Galatz in 1789, the Turks defeated the Russians, and in 1828 the Russians defeated the Turks. )
