THE PATHWAY.

-—»- " (By Farewell.) Through the long extended pathway, Reaching down the halls oi lame, Rose a whisper from the ages, Gathering volume as it came; ’Tis the fall of untold pinions. Beating down the storied aisle. ' l Ghostly pinions, brushing soitly , Dust from marble slab and tile. Ghosts of countless bygone ages, ' Riding on those whisp’ring wings, Leave the dusk of early morning, • Leave the land whore shadow clings; And they gather in the Pathway, ; Joining with that moving throng, ' Starting up from nook and cranny, Through the years they sweep along. ,Ghosts of men of wondrous learning, j Fashioned in no given plan, Great men called from all the nations, I Black and white and red and tan ; ( 'Prophets from the tombs of Egypt, j Gaunt of fame and spare of limb, With ten thousand years of silence Written on their features dim. Horsemen, sea-kings, pale with saltrime From the leagues of Hying foam, 1 War-men from the sandalled legions Ruled by lords of ancient Home; Desperadoes, martyrs, heroes, Some who had not rank nor name, All who kept the torch of courage Burning in the Hulls of Fame. But a solemn hush comes o’er them , As they reach the Great Divine, Europe, armed, with bloodstained fingers Reels upon the other side; I There the many-headed dragon, j Modern war yells in his glee, There Death’s Angel whispers faintly,, “God of Battles, can it he?” f “Never have the souls of humans Crossed in such a seething tide, ' God of Battles, who shall count them, I .u rlu.v cross the Great Divide.
