The Assembly passed the lirst reading of the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Bill, which empowers the Government to acquire any land for settlement tor, soldiers, and provides advances up to £SOO for discharged soldiers, the repayment extending over forty years. Melbourne, December 20. In the House of Representatives, Mi- Poynton moved ;> twenty-five pei cent increase on the present income tax. The Treasurer submitted a new tax, which lie stated was in many instances more likely to mean an inc_ of a hundred than twenty-live per cent., to operate from July last. The Bill passed all its stages.
