THE MANFNO'S RETURN. Per Press Association. Auckland, December 19. The Maheno returned, bringing 370 officers and men, many of whom were wounded in the Somme-advance. They tell stirring stories of the gallant work of the New Zealanders. Many of flic wounded are surgical cases, including one Maori with his legs shot off, but replaced by artificial limbs. He can walk with the aid of sticks. The Maheno has been on cross Channel work, and the staff have had many exciting experiences, including witnessing the bombardment of the South Coast by Zeppelins, and the mining of oil ships. The vessel has 95 patients for Auckland, 150 for Wellington, 70 for Port Chalmers, and 01 for Lyttelton. There are a number of very severe cases, but the health of the men on the whole is invariably good. There were no deaths, except that of a nursing*sister, who was returning invalided.
