Murder Charge

RIVER-BAMK TRAGEDY. OCTOGSINARIAH ARRESTED. A REMARKABLE STORY. Per Press Association. Wellington, December 11. The police have been advised that Patrick Kiely, 80 years of age, was arrested at Waipawa yesterday on a charge of murdering George Dodds by cutting his throat on Saturday night. Kiely lias lived for some montlis in a wliare on tlm bank of the Waipawa river, and latterly two middleaged casual labourers named George Dodds and James Wainwright, apparently wandering in search of work, camped near by. Early on yesterday morning, Wainwright reported to the police that the three men had had a friendly chat on Saturday night, but later Kiely came to the other men’s hut. ami rushing at Dodds, inflicted fearful injuries with a knife, almost severing the head from the body. It is further stated that the old man attacked Wainwright, inflicting wounds, which, however, are not considered dangerous. THE INQUEST ADJOURNED. KIELY REMANDED. An inquest was opened this morning, and after formal evidence of identification, was adjourned for a week. Kiely, on a charge of murder, has been remanded till Tuesday, 19th inst.
