NOTES. Those who take even a passing interest in the “Sport of Kings''’ have been a little puzzled and even somewhat argumentative during the past couple of days as to whether a horse called Altercation or another animal named Alteration had won the Welter Hack Handicap at Woodville on Wednesday. The Press Association telegrams said it was Altercation, but special correspondents all asserted •that Alteration was the particular pea. One Wellington scribe says regarding the race:—“Atuatoro was the ionly withdrawal from the Melter jHack Handicap. The New Plymouth I Auckland Cup candidate, Alteration, well ridden in front by IV. Young, won from end to end, and scored with something in hand from Sir Wallace and Sir Agnes. Alteration is a well- ' grown three-year-old by Lie ration from the dam of Labour Day, and scored his first win to-day. Sir Agues did well to carry iO.ll into third place. An objection against the ■rider of the winner for alleged inter--1 fercniv was dismissed.” I bus though them was no Altercation on the card, the alt'-ratidn" of names in the telegrams might have led to an altercation in the settlement ot accounts between pals!
