A London cable reports -the death of Lady Tennyson, at the Isle of Wight, from pneumonia.

An Auckland Press message states that Thomas James ,Lanigan, of St. Joseph’s, School, . Thames, won the Sacred Heart Colleeg scholarship, of the value of 40 guineas a year, tenable for two years.

Private advices, received yesterday at Gisborne, show that Private Frank Ratcliffe, of Gisborne, has been recommended for the Victoria Cross for rescuing wounded under fire during the Somme battle. He left with the 7th Reinforcements.

A cable from London states, that James Braid, the well-known professional golfer, was accidentally killed whilst boarding a train ,at Waterloo station. He won the open championship of England in 1901, 1905, 1906, 1908, and 1910.

The death occurred at St, Albans on Saturday evening, at the age of seventy years, of Mr William Curry, who arrihed at Lyttelton forty-seven years ago in the ship Siberia. He took up land in the Akaroa district, and he remained on the peninsula until fdbout two years ago, when he retired and went to ’Christchurch. He leaves a widow, five daughters and five sons.

Mr William Garrett, senr., of Mount Eden, Auckland, died on Sunday morning. ’ He was talking to his son, Bombardier J, T. Garrett, when wfthout any warning of previous indisposition, he suddenly expired. Mr Garrett was a native - of County Cavan, Ireland, having come to New Zealand in the ship Lady Jocelyn, as a member of a party of settlers under Mr G. Yesey Stewart’s Katikati Settlement scheme. Mr Garrett leaves a widow, five sons, and five daughters. Three sons are with the forces.

One of the Crimean veterans passed away suddenly on Monday at Leith Valley, Dunedin, where he had been living for the past 46 years. This was Mr Alexander Carson, who was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1829, and attained the age of last August. He was all through the Crimean (am-

paign in the vigor of his early manhood, and wore two medals and a / clasp, indicating that he had had part in the historic struggles at Sebastopol and Alma. He left the army in 1868, and came to New Zealand in IS7O, where he had been engaged in farming and gardening in the Leith 'N alley ever since.

Private Hon M'Gallan, who v few months ago was reported killed, the report being corrected later, in a letter to a member of the Christchurch Press Company’s staff, of which ho was a member before his enlistment, tells how his name came to appear in the casualty list:—“l was taking a stroll down a hill in Fritz’s view, wh n J heard an H.E. (high explosive shell) coming, so jumped into a shell no e. The shell burst just in front of me,, and, of course., buried mo. A major at] the back of me saw that I had disap-j peared, and came to the conclusion that I had been blown to hits, and reported accordingly. I could not and my company till two or three ( ays after, and the report of my death won right through to headquarters, it looked quite funny to see my name -n the English papers.” At time of w n - ing, Private BTGallan was in Broc ;on hurst Hospital, England, recovering from an operation for appendicitis.
