The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1916. WAR REGULATIONS.
The new war regulations for the Dominion of Now Zealand which were gazetted a few days ago are fairly comprehensive and far-reaching. They give power to the Government to at once deal with persons who, from whatever cause, excite opposition • to the enforcement or administration of the recent enactments regarding compulsory military service, or the training for such service. The regulations also provide for specially dealing with any person or persons who "attempt to promote or encourage* sedition or disloyalty in our midst. To-interfere with the “manufacture, output, supply, delivery, or carriage of any goods or articles required hy his Majesty, whether in New Zealand or elsewhere, for any purpose in connection with the present war,” or to “interfere with the loading, unloading, manning, equipment, despatch, or use ot any vessel carrying or about to carry from New Zealand I any of his Majesty’s forces or any j goods or merchandise belonging to or j destined for or required by his. Majesty, whether in Now Zealand orj else'iyhere, for any purpose in eonnee-j lion with the present war,” is, to com-1 fait aat offence heavily punishable, as iti very properly should be. Some useful provisions lor the exclusion ot undesirable persons are also made, and it is set out that when the AttorneyGeneral is satisfied that any poison is disaffected or disloyal, or of such a character that his presence in New Zealand would be injurious to public safely ,and that such person is about to arrive or land in New Zealand irom parts beyond the seas, tin* Attorney - General may hy order signed by him prohibit that person from landing m New Zealand. Another danse provides that when the Attorney-General, in pursuance of clause 26 of the Wai Regulations of the 21th day of duly, |!)lfi, orders a fly person to leave New Zealand, the Attorney-General may, 1 by the same order, if be thinks such a course necessary for the public safety, authorise the immediate arrest and
detcutiioii of that person, and tliei upon any nllieer may, without nan.ml, arrest that person and plane him on hoard any vessel about to leave New Zealand for the country from which he came to New Zealand, and detain linn on board that vessel until it has h'it New Zealand. Breaches or evasions of auv of these regulations are, of
course, severely punishable. It is to bo hoped that the power having been placed in the Government’s hands it will not be slow to use it for the State s welfare. Traitors and scti.tinn mongers must be brought to book.
