The'Assembly has established a record, sitting continuously since Monday, debating the Estimates. Mr Holman, justifying the expenditu c of £6OOO on representation in America quoted Mr Neilsen’s report, that, whereas New Zealand was nearer America than Australia, the freights were 25 per cent, lower. New Zealand exports to America in the last three years increased by 23-t per cent., or £1,250,000, while Australia’s exports to America were 500 per cent, and £9,000,000 iu 1913. The balance of trade with America against New Zealand was 34 per cent, in 1916, and IS per cent., against Australia’s c 9 and 4 per cent. TOTALISATOR AND DRINK. Press Association—Copyright. The Liquor Amendment Bill, which has received the Governor’s assent, provides for the absolute closing of hotels on Christmas Day and Good Friday, and the prohibition of the sale of soft drinks after six o’clock.
