The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1916. BRITISH CABINET CRISIS.
Tlio • upheaval in British politics at such a time is an amazing example of our extraordinary national character, hilt it does appear, from the later light thrown upon it, that some good may come out of the turmoil. It is at least comforting to learn that though there has been a conflict of personalities and a conflict of policies in the Cabinet and War Council, our enemies may be sure of one thing; that at least perfect unanimity exists as to the carrying on of the war to the final successful issue always resolved upon, and the only difference the dropping overboard of Mr Asquith can make is that the offensive will be taken more vigorously and more relentlessly. There are many rumours in the air regarding the new Cabinet and its leadership, and the chances of Mr Lloyd Ceorge being able to form an acceptable Ministry. For the moment this crisis in politics has overshadowed ’‘the great issues of the war itself,' but we may hope for a speedy arrangement. Mr Asquith i Ims served his country well and may yet do much for it in the right place, 1 but the conviction is being forced on all shades of political opinion that his place is not at the head of the War. Council. Britain wants a strong 'aggressive policy with far less of the “by-your-leave” methods which have shamed us in Greece. The issue is
too grave for us to • longer stand on ceremony and in this light, which for long enough now has been an “allin” struggle so lar as Germany is concerned, we must act with greater determination and greater ruthlessness than ever before.
