PERSONAL.
The death is announced from Paris of Dr. E. Doyen, a wonderful surgeon who devoted himself to the study of cancer. He invented a serum called mycolysine, which he claimed helped to retain youth. Mr J. Lister, Stratford, yesterday received a cable stating that his brother, Private Harold Lister,, was in hospital at Brockenhurst. England, suffering from myalgia (stiffness or cramp in the voluntary muscles), but was progressing favorably. Mr V. C. Davies, of New Plymouth, was presented at Stratford On Tuesday by the Taranaki Nurserymen's Association, for which, he has acted as secrotary, with a handsome letter-case as a mark of appreciation of his services. Mr Davies is going into camp next month. Among the list of those who died of wounds appears the name of Private John Robert Anderson, son of Mr and Mrs Jos. Anderson, East Road. The deceased, who was 22 years of age, was educated and distinguished himself at the Stratford School, afterwards entering the Stratford branch of the Bank of Australasia, where he remained for four years. He gave great promise and was transferred to Taumarunui, To Puke and then Rotorua from which place he left when he joined the loth Reinforcements. He was popular with everyone and much sympathy will be extended to the parents.
A very pretty wedding took place at Te Topo on Tuesday, when Miss Ellie Knox, daughter of Mr and Mrs G. C. Knox, was married to-Mr Valentine Smith, of Beaconslield Road, Midhirst. The nuptial ceremony was performed at the house of the bride's parents by the Rev. C. W. Howard (Vicar of Stratford), and was of a quiet nature. Both bride and bridesmaids were pretty attired, Miss Coleman (Ngaere) being bridesmaid while Mr Walter Smith brother of the bridegroom acted as best man. The bride and bridegroom being well known in the district, they were the recipients of many handsome presents, the bnde (who was for some time and up to the time of the happy event teacher at the Aekland Road school) receiving a. suitable gift of cutlery from the Committee of that school. Among the guests, in addition to that of the bride's family and local friends were Mrs Wells (Fielding) Mr Victor Davies (•New Plymouth.) The usual best wishes were extended te the happy pair, who left later on for Auckland, where the honeymoon is being spent.
