Twenty-five ships were lost in the week-end gales on the British coast. The Ramsgate and Deal lifeboats futilely attempted to rescue those aboard the American steamer Siberia, which grounded on the"’* Goodwin Sands. Several of the boats’ crews were injured. The Siberia’s crew and passengers, including women numbering 4.0, were last seen crowded on the bridge. In October there were losses of 113 vessels with tonnage amounting to 266,053, compared to 63 with tonnage of 160,000 in the previous October.
