AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. I Press- Association—Copvnsht i Melbourne, November 16. At the NewmarKet blook stock sales the demand was slack. Many were passed in. The top price secured 'was for Court Jester, namely, .700 guineas. S '" J Tile heavy hailstorms and rain pmlcourse unsafe for the Steeplechase, and the programme was, therefore, postponed till Saturday. The Coulfield Club's Saturday meeting was postponed to avoid clashing. As an unsolicited testimonial to the effect that racing is not interfering with the maintenance of the manpower of the i3ritish Army, Lieuten-ant-Colonel Alan Chichester, chief constable of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, writes to the English press: "As there has been so much controversy as to whether racing should be discontinued, it may interest the general public to know that yesterday a very close examination of all persons of apparently military ago was' made at Newmarket ra'coicolu'se, with the result that no 'shirkers' wore discovered. The persons examined took it all in good part. Petrol' licenses were inspected by the police and found in order, and no motor char-a-bancs arrived at the course. lam not a racing man, so that my statement may be taken as a bare fact without prejudice."
