£5 FINES FOR SHOUTING. SOME STRATFORD CASES. At the local -Magistrate's Court this 'afternoon, before Mr W. R. Haseluen, | S.M., Charles Swadling (TaurnkawaV [was charged with purchasing liquorj at the Stratford Hotel, the liquor being consumed by Frahk Trebes and Thomas Barraclough also at Midhirst 'on 13th, and at Toko on the I.9th September last. Sergeant Dale conducted the case on behalf of the Police, and Mr A. H.I Johnstone represented the defendant, [and pleaded "not guilty." j On the first charge, after hearing the evidence, the .Magistrate , fined idefendant Co and Is in each of the [other two cases. Thomas Bayraclough (Taurakawa) (was similarly charged with treating Charles Swadling at the Stratford Hotel, also at Midhirst, and at Toko on the same dates. Mk A. H. Johnstone represented defendant, and pleaded ''guilty." Defendant was fined £q on the first charge, and Is in the other twq cases, and was allowed two weeks in which to pay the money. TRADING WITH THE ENEMY. Valentine Helbling. of Stratford, was charged that he paid Cf) 10s to Leipsiz Insurance Co., of Germany, thereby trading with the enemy contrary to proclamation of September 9, 1916. Mr D. Risher acted as interpreter, and pleaded "guilty," stating he did not understand the seriousness of the , • ~'.l, I charge. Sergeant Dale gaye, evidence , that the Censor had detained certain correspondence relating to payment of insurance premiums. The Magistrate fined defendant £l.
