THE FIRST BALLOT. MILITARY SERVICE ACT. Per Press Association. Wellington, November 15. At a meeting of the Executive Council to-day an Order-iu-Council, as reip; i rod hy section 32, sub-section i, of the Military Service Act was passed empowering the Minister of Defence to issue a warrant authorising the commandant of the defence forces to call from the first division ol the reserve for service with the Expeditionary Force a sufficient numbei of reservists to make good the shortages which have been found to exist in the 23rd and 24th Reinforcements.

Pursuant to this authority the Commandant has directed the Government Statistician to call up sufficient reservists to make good the shoi tages and to allow a margin for men found to be medically unfit and for men who are exempted on appeal. A start will be made with the ballot at 9 o’clock to-morrow (Thursday) morning. No reservists will be called up by ballot for recruiting districts No. I (Auckland City) No. 7 (Hawke’s Bay), No. 12 (.Nelson), and No. 20 (Wanganui). IQtli PARADE AT WELLINGTON. Wellington, November 10. Large crowds witnessed the paracm of tbe 19th Reinforcements tins afternoon. The general appearance of the men was much admired, and they were given many rounds of cheer* as tuey passed through the streets.
