MONTHLY MEETING. . At tlu* monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board field yesterday, there were present —Messrs J. McAllister (chairman). G. Smith, R. McK. Morison, C. D. Sole, and J. Christoffel. THE DISEASE OE CANCER. The Inspector-General wrote stating that according to last year’s statistics, no less than 900 deaths had been recorded in the Dominion from cancer, and pointing out that there was need for co-operation with the view to stemming the ever-increasing mortal- , ity. In addition to the dissemination of literature prepared by the Department in conjunction with the British Medical Association, ho asked that the attention of the public be drawn to the fact that the doors of all institutions were open for consultation for advice and treatment. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Solo, it was resolved tljat this circular ho endorsed, that] the Board do its utmost to give olfeet I to the recommendations, and that the Department ho asked to publish any information available regarding the predisposition and causes of cancer. The Chairman reported on his interview with the lather of a child who was an in-patient of the hospital, and who was now recommended to go to the New Plymouth Hospital.—The action of the Chairman was conlirmed. and after discussion, the following resolution, to he applicable to all future cases, was adopted: “That the Hoard decline to guarantee the payment of fees to outside institutions, unless the cases concerned have been reported on by our Medical Superintendent." Nurse Mac/achlan (Whangamomona) wrote asking to he relieved of duty after the 12th November. Owing to the difficulty experienced in obtaining a Nurse for Whangamomona, it was resolved that an advertisement he inserted in the New Zealand Times. REPORTS. The Medical ’Superintendent (Hr. gteven) reported that during October, 10 patients were admitted. 17 discharged, and 10 remained in hospital at the end of the month. Five opera-

j tions were performed under aiiaestheI tics. HEALTH INSPECTOR. Mr A. Gray (Health Inspector) reported that three cases of diphtheria were notified, two being in the Borough and one in the County. Drainage and plumbing work at the public and three private hospitals was inspected. Three samples of milk were forwarded to the Dominion analyst and found to comply with the regulations. Premises were revisited in the County where a privy had been ordered to be pulled down, but had not vet been done. MATRON’S REPORT. Tluf Matron reported that Nurse Cramer had passed her first year examination during the month, and that she and Nurse Weir had also obtained cooking certificates. GARDENER’S REPORT. The Gardener reported that the garden was in fAa- order, the heavy rain having pre waited him giving the best attention to it. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2IG 2s 5d were passed for payment. In order to deal with the financial position of the Board, it was resolved to cal! a special mooting of the Board at at earlv date.
